UIowa Remote Voice Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy outlines how The University of Iowa Hoffman Lab (“we,” “our,” or “us”) collects, uses, and safeguards the information you provide while using the UIowa Remote Voice Survey app (“the App”). By using the App, you agree to the terms described in this policy.

a. Personal Information

Username: We generate and use a unique identifier (e.g., ExampleLoginCredential0001) to maintain your anonymity. No personally identifiable information, such as your name or contact details, is collected through the App.

b. Survey Responses

Your responses to fixed medical questionnaires (e.g., SDS, PHQ9, UCLA) are collected to support research analysis.

c. Voice Recordings

We collect audio recordings of specific voice tasks you complete in the App. These recordings are used solely for research purposes.

d. Usage Data

We may collect data about how you use the App, including the pages you visit and actions you perform, to help improve the App’s functionality and user experience.

2. How We Use Your Information

Your data is used for the following purposes:

  • Medical Research: To contribute to ongoing and future medical studies aimed at understanding and improving healthcare outcomes related to speech and voice.
  • Data Analysis: Your survey responses and audio recordings may be analyzed by researchers to derive meaningful insights and findings.
  • App Improvement: Usage data may be analyzed to improve app functionality and the user experience.

We do not sell or share your data with third parties for commercial purposes.

3. Data Storage and Security

We take the security of your data seriously and employ a variety of measures to ensure it is protected, including but not limited to:

  • Encryption: Data is encrypted both during transmission and at rest on our servers.
  • Secure Servers: Data is stored on secure servers with restricted access.
  • Anonymity: Your username is anonymized, and no personally identifiable information is linked to your survey responses or audio recordings.

Note: Despite our efforts, no data transmission over the internet or electronic storage method can be guaranteed to be 100% secure.

4. Data Sharing and Disclosure

We do not share your information with third parties.

5. Data Retention

Your data will be retained for the duration of the research study and as required to comply with applicable laws and regulations. After the study concludes, data may be stored securely for future research use in a manner that maintains your anonymity.

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to:

  • Access Your Data: Request a copy of the data we have collected about you.
  • Request Deletion: Request that we delete your data, subject to research and legal requirements.
  • Withdraw Consent: Withdraw your participation in the study at any time, though data already collected may still be used for research purposes.
